Simeon King Cycle for Type 1

Simeon King is a type 1 diabetes advocate, athlete, and Leader/Mentor with I Challenge Diabetes. Diagnosed with T1D at age 11, Simeon discovered through his experiences with ICD that diabetes did not have to define what he could accomplish. A former collegiate athlete, he has embraced adventure, athletics, and leadership while helping others living with T1D recognize their own potential.

In 2025, Simeon founded Cycle for Type 1, embarking on a solo cross-Canada cycling journey from Vancouver to St. John’s. Over 80 days and more than 6,800 kilometres, he travelled across the country to raise awareness about the realities of living with T1D and raise funds for ICD. The campaign ultimately raised more than $112,000 and connected with more than 40,000 Canadians.

Through his advocacy, leadership, and connection with the T1D community, he continues to inspire others to challenge their own boundaries and pursue extraordinary goals.

Chris Jarvis Founder & Executive Director of ICD

Chris Jarvis is the Founder and Executive Director of I Challenge Diabetes, a Canadian charity dedicated to empowering people living with type 1 diabetes through sport, adventure, education, and community.

Diagnosed as a teenager, Chris experienced firsthand the challenges of pursuing an active life with diabetes.

A former Olympic rower, Chris represented Canada at the 2004 Athens Olympics and went on to win gold at the 2007 Pan American Games. His experiences as an elite athlete, and the support he received from fellow athletes living with diabetes, inspired him to create I Challenge Diabetes in 2007.

Today, Chris uses his experience as an athlete, mentor, and advocate to help people with diabetes build confidence, develop practical skills, and challenge the belief that diabetes should limit what they can accomplish.

Katharine Mackett PhD, Clinical Epidemiology

Katharine (Katie) Mackett, PhD, is a diabetes researcher, patient partner, and advocate dedicated to improving the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes. With more than 25 years of lived experience with T1D, Katie brings a unique perspective to her work, combining academic research with firsthand understanding of the challenges and opportunities within diabetes care.

In 2026, Katie and colleagues from I Challenge Diabetes published Implementation of a peer mentorship program for type 1 diabetes in Canada: A qualitative analysis of peer mentor perspectives in the journal Patient Education and Counseling.

Through her research and collaboration with the diabetes community, Katie is passionate about ensuring that the voices and experiences of people with diabetes help shape better programs, research, and care.

ICD Gear

Our skull logo was designed by founder Chris Jarvis when he and 11 type one teammates took on the Canadian Death Race. One of the world's toughest ultramarathons in the Rocky Mountains, the team covered 445 km in just 24 hours. The crossed needles signify that insulin allows us to take on any challenge, in the gym, in sport and on the trail.

Why am I being asked to complete self-identification questions?

The following questions are optional. The collection of self-identification data is a central piece of ICD's commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion(EDI).
