Get ready to step out of your comfort zone and into your canoe for a truly Canadian adventure -paddling through crystal-clear lakes, tracing storied rivers, and surrounded by the rugged peaks of British Columbia’s Cariboo Mountains. With a crew of the most adventurous type 1s around, you’ll explore the wild heart of Canada in the most unforgettable way possible.
Imagine gliding across mirror-still waters with mountains rising ahead, plunging into an icy-blue lake after a long paddle, spotting a moose and her calf along the shoreline, and falling asleep under a blanket of stars. Every paddle stroke connects you to the history and spirit of this land, from the Indigenous peoples who thrived here for generations, to the gold rush explorers whose old cabins and weathered mileposts still whisper stories from the 1860s.
Over 9 epic days, you’ll travel through Bowron Lake Provincial Park, a pristine wilderness shaped like a perfect parallelogram of 12 interconnected lakes and rivers. Together, we’ll paddle more than 100 km, navigate calm lakes and flowing rivers, and tackle 11 km of portage trails where teamwork (and a good sense of humor) will get us through.
Throughout the journey, you’ll also learn and practice the art of diabetes management in the backcountry — gaining confidence in handling challenges like physical exertion, nutrition, glucose control, and gear care in a wilderness environment. Our experienced guiding team will be there every step of the way, providing instruction, support, and a safe space to grow your skills and independence.
This adventure is open to strong teens and adults with T1D who are physically fit and able to carry up to 30% of their body weight in a pack during portages. If you’re willing to work hard, embrace a few challenges, and push yourself to earn some truly amazing rewards — this trip is for you.
This isn’t just a trip. It’s a journey of connection, resilience, and awe. So grab your paddle, your sense of adventure, and join us for one of North America’s most iconic wilderness experiences - and discover just how capable you really are.
